Autumn is upon us, which  means it’s almost time to pack away your sundresses, shorts and sandals for next year. Although it’s hard to say goodbye to our summer fashion staples, fall brings an opportunity for a whole new wardrobe — think cozy sweaters and cute boots. We asked the local fashion experts what’s trending this season.

Color trends

“This season’s color trends include neutrals, mauves and bold pops of color in between, as well as soothing colors followed by a cheerful pop of color. Don’t be afraid to be bold this fall. While neutrals are always a staple, add a fun sweater or cardigan to your wardrobe.”

Women’s clothing

“Trending fashion items are skirts, fringe, shackets, chunky sweaters, straight-leg cropped denim (raw hems, high-waisted) and layers.”

–Heather TenHarmsel, owner of The Poppy Peach; Holland

“The fall must-have item of the year for women is a shacket. Is it a shirt or a jacket … it’s a shacket. Layer it with a basic tee, brami or your favorite band tee.”

Women’s accessories

“Wide-brim hats for women is the ‘it’ item in accessories. Wear it with your favorite shacket for a more casual look or dress it up with your favorite dress.”

–Kristi Ham, director of marketing at Glik’s Boutique; locations in Grand Haven, Saugatuck and Holland

“Fall accessory trends this year are layering necklaces, gold, chain-link jewelry and statement earrings.”

Women’s shoe trends

“Clogs are a great transition shoe, especially for fall when you’re not ready for boots, but it’s too cold for sandals. Or, try thick soles/flatforms — yes, they are coming back! Another fall trend is glittery, metallic and fun-patterned sneakers, boots and shoes.”

Don’t forget about the guys

Women’s fashion trends tend to get more attention, but we didn’t forget about the guys! Kristi Ham, director of marketing at Glik’s Boutique, shares that shackets (shirt/jackets) and Carhartt beanies are hot men’s fashion musts this season.

For shoes, Colleen Cemugel, manager at For the Love of Shoes, says that elevated sneakers, classic dress shoes and dress chukka boots are trendy options for fall.
