You gotta try Fenn Valley Vineyards and Virtue Cider

Fenn Valley VineyardsFenn Valley Vineyards

Established in 1973, the 240-acre vineyard and winery complex is family- owned and -operated. The goal of the Welsch family is to produce world-class wines from grapes grown along the Lake Michigan shoreline.

Tours and tastings are available at the winery near Fennville, and the downtown Saugatuck tasting room.

Cleber Miranda, assistant manager, recommends Fenn Valley’s award-winning Capriccio, a dry red wine. The wine shows the right balance between fruitiness and dryness and can be served with chicken, red meats or pasta.

Virtue Cider

Virtue Cider

Gregory Hall, former brewmaster at Goose Island Beer Company in Chicago, founded Virtue Cider in 2011. The hard cider venture moved to Fennville in 2013. Its European-style craft ciders are made from fresh heirloom Michigan apples using traditional production methods and an expansive barrel-aging program.

Cidermaker Matt Holley recommends Michigan Brut, one of the cidery’s flagship ciders, now available in cans.

“Michigan Brut is a dry, crisp cider,” he said. “It’s refreshing, and it pairs well with food.”
